"I took a walk around my Oakland neighborhood last weekend. Within a few blocks, it turned out, I had entered a hate-free zone. I considered turning around, because my heart is not entirely free from hate. Decoding the sign with my secret Bleeding Heart Liberal De-encryption Device, I understood it to mean certain kinds of hate, the kind experienced by victims of what we have come to call hate crimes. The message could be a bit more positive. How about: "Hooray for gay people!" or "People of color rock my world!" or even "Love everybody, dammit!"
